NEW DELHI, June 12: Tihar jail authorities have reportedly decided to serve food to jail inmates in plastic plates keeping in mind the increasing number of cases where prisoners shaped aluminum utensils into sharp edged weapons.

According to sources in Tihar jail, the prisoners found it very easy to hide a spoon or even a plate during meal times and later shape them into weapons. Authorities claim that plastic is a good option as it cannot be so used.

They had earlier used earthen utensils which were not a solution because they broke easily and were often used to inflict injury during clashes.

In all the cases of stabbing reported from Tihar in the last few months, the weapon of offence was found to be shaped from an aluminum spoon or plate.

The problem of over-crowding in Tihar jail was also being looked into, jail authorities said.
