A petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking an independent inquiry into the assets and wealth of several CPI(M) leaders, including party general secretary Prakash Karat and his wife Brinda Karat.
The petition has been filed by advocate Joydeep Mukherjee on behalf of the All Indian Legal Aid Forum, an NGO which has in the past filed several PILs on politically sensitive issues. Raising questions about the source of income of the CPI(M) and its leaders, the PIL stated that the party had about 7,000 full-time party workers who were being paid Rs 3,200 per month.
Mukherjee, who is also general secretary of the NGO, and claims to be a “nationalist” close to the BJP, has asked for an inquiry by an independent agency like the CBI to ascertain the sources of income of top CPI(M) leaders like Nilotpal Bose, Binoy Konar, Mohammad Salim, Biman Basu, Bans Gopal Choudhari, Lakshman Seth, Sudhanshu Sil and Hannan Mollah.
The petition, which has made the Union of India a party, urged the court to admit the petition under Article 32. The petition cites the cases of UP Chief Minister Mayawati and SP chief Mulayum Singh Yadav.
Asked whether he would seek an early hearing into the case, the advocate said he would file such a petition only after the trust vote, as before it, the PIL would be construed as “politically motivated”.
