The former Saudi Arabia intelligence service chief corroborated the fact, when in remarks published on Sunday he said bin Laden was alive and preparing for a surprise comeback. ‘‘I believe he is alive…and waiting for the appropriate time. It will come as a surprise like he did before,’’ Prince Turki al-Faisal told the Saudi-owned Ashraq al-Awsat newspaper in an interview. According to the London-based paper, the prince said his opinion about Saudi-born fugitive bin Laden was based on ‘‘his own information’’.

In the intercepts, Omar and a senior aide were discussing the US-led hunt to track them down. Omar then turned to a third person, the Observer weekly reported from Jalalabad, Pakistan. After exchanging a few words, Omar said ‘‘Sheikh sends his salaams’’. Senior Taliban figures refer to Bin laden as ‘‘Sheikh’’.
