University of Rajasthan did lose half their side, but had few difficulties in overhauling their target of 140 against Maharaja Shahajirao University in the first round of the West Zone Inter University Cricket Tournament for the Rizvi Trophy at Fort Vijay, Azad Maidan on Monday.

Sachin Agarwal’s gritty unbeaten 70 was the only bright spark in an otherwise disappointing batting display by the Gujarat outfit, as he scored more than half the runs in his team’s total tally. But, Agarwal was left stranded as he got little support from the rest of his teammates.

Phaseykapil Kumar anchored Rajasthan’s chase with a solid 56, while all the other batsmen chipped in with useful contributions. Atul Puri was the pick of the bowlers for the victorious team, as he returned figures of 4 for 25, while Adil Kamal, Ravi Sharma and Abdul Waheed chipped in with two wickets each.

Hitesh Nandanwar’s swashbuckling unbeaten 111 was the only century on the opening day of the tournament, and it helped SGB University, Amravati in amassing a staggering 281 for five. In reply, Vikram University from Ujjain were cleaned up for 73, with Nandkishor Parsekar claiming 5-19, handing the Amravati side a crushing 208-run victory.

In another one-sided contest in Kandivali, Dharmsinh Desai beat MLSU from Udaipur by 80 runs. Kamlesh Dangi’s amazing 6-14 helped MLSU dismiss their opponents for 146. But they failed to even make a match of it, as Ravi Aghara struck back with 5-22, and MLSU could muster only a paltry 66.

In a low-scoring match, Bikaner University overcame Uttar Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Jalgaon by 11 runs at the MCA Ground II, Kandivali.

Bikaner were restricted to a modest 139 with Shaktipal Mund missing a half century by four runs. But they struck back to dismiss Uttar Maharashtra for 128 runs in a thrilling finish.
