The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has demanded closure of an online community which, it claims, instigates violence towards animals on the social networking site Orkut.

In a letter to the Mumbai Cyber Crime Investigation Cell, PETA says it was shocked to see the topics discussed on the Orkut community ‘I hate dogs’, which among other things discussed “How 2 kill a dog?”. PETA says one member suggests killing of puppies “by dropping them from a building” and also admits to throwing three puppies, while another member says that “I have killed 2 with my car after 10-12 hard tries”.

In the letter addressed to the Joint Commissioner of Police, copied to the Secretary, Department of Information and Technology, Government of India and Google, PETA has urged the police to immediately direct the website to block such illegal content.
