BARODA, APRIL 15: A bill providing for a monthly pension to about 450 million unorganised workers will be placed before the Union Cabinet within a month, Union Minister of State for Social Welfare Maneka Gandhi said here today.

Gandhi, who was here to attend various functions, told PTI that the Bill would cover all types of persons working in the unorganised sector.

She said it was for the first time in 50 years after independence that the Union Government was taking concrete steps for the welfare of unorganised workers.

Gandhi said a scheme was being worked out under which a worker desiring to get the benefit of the pension scheme would have to save Re 1 per day.

This amount might be increased depending upon the capacity of the person to pay, she said and added that there would be six options before the beneficiaries to choose from.

The scheme would enable a worker to get monthly pension from Rs 4,000 to Rs 10,000, Gandhi added.
