Militants here gunned down a PDP leader outside his house and two J-K policemen who tried to stop them. Forty-five-year-old Ghulam Mohammad Dar, a leader from Budgam, was ready to receive his uncle who was returning from Haj in Hyderpora at 9.30 am. Family friend Ghulam Qadir recounts: ‘‘He was standing there, watching the cars on their way to receive pilgrims at the airport. He was waiting there for his uncle…till a youth walked upto him and shot him in the forehead.’’

Seeing Dar fall, pedestrians rushed to him when another shot rang out. The fleeing militants had shot at two J-K policemen posted on the airport road — across the road from where Dar was shot.

‘‘The policemen were on duty to ensure safe passage of Haj pilgrims on the airport road. They tried to stop the militant. But a second militant shot at them and fled. Dar and a policeman died on the spot while the other cop died in hospital,’’ said Srinagar DIG Mohammad Amin Shah.

Meanwhile, a militant group identifying itself as Save Kashmir Movement has claimed responsibility for the killings.
