The ruling PDP on Tuesday apologised for ‘‘hurting sentiments of women’’ through the incident in which party chief Mehbooba Mufti lifted the veil of a woman, allegedly a bogus voter in Srinagar last week, but maintained that catching a ‘‘thief is not a crime’’.

‘‘If sentiments of women have been hurt by the incident, we apologise,’’ senior party leader and Law Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig said. He, however, claimed that the woman was in fact a ‘‘doubtful voter’’.

Claiming that the woman had given contradictory answers when asked about her identity, Baig said ‘‘catching a thief is not a crime’’. — (PTI)
