PUNE, Nov 3: There is many a slip between the cup and the lip. So Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) discovered to its chagrin when it tied up with BPL Mobile for the erecting the railings at M G Road. Two months have passed since the company finally offered to do the railings at M G Road and progress on the work has been very slow.

President of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) Brig Madan Gopal expressed serious misgivings about the slow pace of work by the company and issued a stern warning that he may be forced to review the deal with the company on November 6, if the company did not respond to the appeals of the cantonment board and speed up the pace of the work.

According to Brig Madan Gopal, the company was to complete work long before Diwali. However, there seemed to be little signs of the company finishing work on shedule, he observed, adding that this was badly affecting the pace of the beautification plan of the cantonment board for M G Road.

“We cannot place the planters and plan for the flower beds unless the railings are complete,” he told The Indian Express. After a prolonged struggle for more thana decade, the Pune Cantonment Board succeeded in evicting the hawkers from M G Road in November last year. The hawkers have been shifted to `Fashion Street’ off Gen Thimayya Road following which the board had formed a beautification committee to decide upon a final plan M G Road. This included cutting the size of the pavements, installing planters and flower beds across the street. However, the poor response from the corporates forced the board to shelve its plan to go in for Agra Red stone tiles since the cost had escalated to Rs. 75 lakh. The board has now installed the normal tiles.

The board has also decided to continue with the contractor presently running the `Pay and Park’ scheme at M G Road until December 31 at the reduced rates of Rs. 8500 per month. Meanwhile, the board will call for new tenders for running this scheme. The elected members of the cantonment board had called for scrapping the contract with the contractor from October 31. However, the board has decided to continue with the same concern until in order to gain time to finalise the new tenders.
