PUNE, April 29: An abstract in oils vies for attention alongside a landscape in watercolour. The portrait of a fiery Rajput captivates the attention of the art lover while the majestic Rajasthani Haveli is reminiscent of the glorious past of the Rajput clan.
Amateur artists now have a cause to celebrate. Sabita Gopal, wife of Pune Cantonment Board president Brig. Madan Gopal today inaugurated an art gallery at M G Road being promoted by the board to encourage new talent.
About 32 paintings by three artists have been displayed at the art gallery located at the Cantonment court office. This is the first exhibition of Tenaz Rao, an army wife, whose husband is a dentist with the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. The constant clutching of her hands belies the fact that this is her first exhibition. Tenaz Rao not only excels in oils, but also pen and ink sketches. Mussarat Masters on the other hand, who has held several exhibitions in Mumbai, prefers abstracts with horses being her favourite subject a la M F Hussein.
The most commendable achievement however seems to be that of a PCB employee Sanjay Thite who is employed with Dr. Babasaheb Ambedker High School as an art teacher. This is my fourth exhibition, he says, admitting that the cause taken up by the cantonment board will certainly inspire other artists to exhibit their paintings in this art gallery.
The paintings in the exhibition are priced between an affordable Rs. 500 to Rs. 16,000.
The exhibition will remain open for another three days between 10.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. The PCB will charge a fee of Rs. 500 per exhibition, Brig. Madan Gopal said.
