MUMBAI, August 25: For the first time in the country a consumer can pay in advance for the electricity he will consume. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) today launched a unique pre-payment meter.Mayor Vishaka Raut launched the pre-payment meter . The BEST general manager V M Lal said paying for power will be similar to paying advance for LPG cylinders. When the consumer purchases the amount of electricity in advance, he will be given a token number which is to be purchased on this meter by pressing the appropriate numbers.The token number identifies the consumer and the amount of electricity purchased. The mater remains operative till the amount of electricity is exhausted.Lal said the consumer will be careful when the stock of electricity is about to be exhausted. With the installation of the pre-payment meter, the consumer need not get anxious about disconnection of power supply due to non-payment.
