MUMBAI, June 1: Anti-Enron activists, assembled under the umbrella of National Alliance of People’s Movements, today demanded a legal inquiry into the assualt on them at Mangaon police station in Mahad taluka on May 28.

According to the activists, they were merely visiting various industry-affected sites in Konkan region as part of a yatra led by their leader Medha Patkar. The yatra went to sites like Ganeshgule, Nivli, Chiplun, and Mahad, places the where locals have protested against industrialisation, forcible acquisition of land and chemical pollution.

The Akhil Bharatiya Macchimar Kriti Samiti president Damodar Tandel protested against the proposal of 48 ports on the Konkan coastline. According to a memorandum presented to Prime Minister I K Gujral yesterday, over six lakh fisher folk will be affected by these mega-projects. Addressing the media at the dharna site in Samrat hotel, activist Yashwant Bait said Chief Minister Manohar Joshi has called them tomorrow with details on the assault incident.

“When we met PM yesterday, Joshi was also present. We told him about the attack on Patkar and other women. However, he said the police claim that our women activists bit the constables which led to the violence. We want to see the wounds caused by us,” Bait said.

Meanwhile, Patkar was taken for medical check up at St George hospital today, due to which she could not address the press.
