DOMKHEDI (Mharashtra), July 11: Ending her seven-day fast on Sunday, Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar announced that she would commit jal samarpan if construction on the Sardar Sarovar dam continued beyond the 88 metre mark before the Sardar Sarovar Project was reviewed by a new tribunal and the government completes rehabilitation of project-affected people.

The announcement came at a public meet here on Sunday. Representatives of 15 villages in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh also announced their resolve to drown themselves in a mark of solidarity with the movement.

An estimated 500 people from affected villages and representatives of voluntary organisations in India and abroad attended the meet. Former minister Bhai Vaidya and 37 students from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, were among those present.

Patkar told Express Newsline that the satyagrah would continue. Before dispersing, the villagers made a human chain across Khad river and broke a replica of the Sardar Sarovar Dam.
