WHO’S STRIKING

12,000-odd employees of Indian (Airlines), under the banner of Air Corporation Employees Union, have gone on a flash strike from Tuesday night.

WHAT’S THE ISSUE

Besides seeking payment of arrears, they are also protesting against the proposal to increase their work hours from 44 to 48 hours per week and reduce annual holidays from 15 to 12 days.

WHAT GOT PARALYSED

Around 50 Indian flights cancelled across the country, dozens delayed, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at the airports.

WHAT’S NEXT

Delhi HC has said the strike is illegal and asked the staff to return to work. Chief Labour Commissioner has also declared it illegal.

The government has decided not to enter into any negotiations till the strike is called off.

The airline has suspended 27 employees, but the union has said the strike will continue.

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has warned of strict action.

New Policy on table

Domestic airlines without the mandatory five-year flying experience could be allowed to fly to international destinations.

Air India and Indian airlines’ monopoly over Gulf routes may be ended after Dec 31 this year.

Stipulation that a carrier must have a fleet of a minimum 20 aircraft to fly abroad likely to remain.
