Former prime minister V.P. Singh attended a dinner party hosted by Ram Jethmalani’s Kashmir committee here tonight in honour of separatist leader Shabir Shah. He was the lone politician to show up at the party although the committee had invited leaders of all national parties.
The dramatic events preceding the second round of talks between Shabir Shah and the committee here today made it clear that the effort was aimed at keeping Kashmiri separatists engaged in a dialogue inspite of the polls in J-K.
Minutes after Shah had arrived at Jethmalani’s residence, the latter returned from an ‘‘hour-long’’ meeting with the PM. Jethmalani claimed that the ‘‘Government would continue to talk (to find a solution to Kashmir) with all elements.”
He denied reports that there was a proposal for a meeting between the Prime Minister and Shah. ‘‘We have not discussed it as yet.’’ Shah and other members of his People’s Democratic Freedom Party were given a rousing reception.
Jethmalani claimed the PM was ‘‘happy’’ to know that ‘‘situation in Kashmir was changing with elements who had hitherto not accepted non-violence realising that the solution lay in peace and understanding.’’
