AHMEDABAD, OCT 26: The Indians gulped down the Kiwi soup served in the designer-dustbowl at Kanpur to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series after which manager Kapil Dev said: “This is just the beginning.”The general feeling now is, appetiser over, the Indians are in mood to feast. But a look at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium Motera wicket, the venue for the third Test starting on Friday, might kill the Indians’ appetite.

The pitch here has a dash of green, substantially solid with barely visible cracks. As far as the Indians are concerned, that’s not what the doctor ordered.

But it’s still early days the team is expected on the ground only on Wednesday. Wickets have changed colours overnight but curator Dhiraj Parsana says he has not received any instructions to change surface nor does he seem to be in mood to entertain any such request.

The pitch comes as a turnaround from the Chotelal special at Kanpur. The Green Revolution can be understood if one unmasks Parsana. A former left-armpaceman, who played two Test matches against the West Indies, he is on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s pitch committee.

Parsana, after bowling on a lifeless tracks all through his career, can give a first hand account of the back breaking effort a bowler has to suffer on home turf. His way of contributing to his flock is by providing them a green “sporting” carpet. “It’s time fast bowlers got a level playing field,” he said.

Defining `sporting’, Parsana says, “Early in the day, it will help the pacer bowlers and later, spinners. Mid-way through the Test, it will develop a slow turn.”

Completely ruling out the crumbling or opening of cracks he said, “The pitch is made by a combination of three soils — red, black, yellow. It will hold all five days.”
