February 8: Youth prevailed over experience in the final of the ABN-AMRO Bank and Kores India-sponsored All-India Ladies Golf Championships at the BPGC here today. Seventeen-year-old Parnita Garewal, of Chandigarh, won the 36-hole match-play competition against five-time former champion, 37-year-old Nonita Lall-Quereshi, of Delhi, 4 and 3.
Parnita, however, was the youngest to bag the title in the 21-year-old history of the competition. That piece of history belongs to Neesha Nirmalingam, of Sri Lanka, when she beat Nonita in 1993. Neesha was a mere 16 then.
Today, Nonita was outplay by Parnita. Nonita twice came close to drawing level with Parnita when she rallied to be within a striking distance of two holes. That was only till the 22nd hole. Thereafter, it depended on how long the match lasted.
Parnita, who was as much as 4-up, received generous praise from her opponent. “Parnita played solid golf. She was always up on me and there was nothing I could do. My effort was concentrated on taking thematch as far as possible,” Nonita said.
“The big lead after the 27th (Parnita was 6 up) induced a bit of complacency in my game. I wanted to finish it off as soon as possible and this led to a slight lack of concentration,” said Parnita, who was never under pressure. Even when Nonita was making a valiant bid to come back into the reckoning.
Parnita was off to a good lead — she was four-up after just nine holes. She fired a birdie on the 2nd hole to take the lead. The players halved the next four holes with pars. Parnita went two up after the sixth and with Nonita striking a bad patch, the Chandigarh girl went four up by parring the 7th and 8th.
Over the second nine Nonita came back into the picture and at the break was just two down, which was all the more remarkable in that after the 10th Parnita with a par went up. Nonita’s fightback started with a birdie on the 12th and it was only after the 17th that Nonita cut down Parnita’s lead to just two.
Nonita continued to match Parnita at the startof the second 18 holes, and it was only from the 23rd that Nonita’s name began to waver. From that point onwards Parnita began to build up her lead and at the 27th was six up. One would have thought that at this stage Nonita would throw in the towel. But she was determined to take the match as far as possible. And did creditably nevertheless, halving the 32 and 33rd with bogeys.
Four pars in a row helped Nonita to cut the leeway to just four, and Parnita in her anxiety to finish off the match, began to falter. However, she got back into focus on the 32nd and halved the next with a bogey to win 4 and 3.
The tussle for the Vikramaditya Trophy among the Bronze Division players (handicap between 18 and 29) went to the 18th before Peetam Valy emerged victorious 2up, against Mohini Chaudhary, who was 2 up after the 10th.Peetam caught up with Mohini at the 12th and went on up at the 17th.
Shakuntala Chauhan won the best gross prize among the seniors (over 50) with an aggressive of 189. The best nett prizewent to Lolly Kamat with 144.
