The Matriculate Entrance Recruitment (MER) tests conducted by the Indian Navy to recruit sailors at Ranchi and Kanpur have been cancelled after the CBI filed a case against unnamed Navy personnel and four Bihar youths for allegedly pilfering question papers. Three of the youths — Rajiv Ranjan, Manoj Kumar and Anil Kumar — were produced before the CBI court of Judge D.Lal today. Judge Lal remanded them to four days custody.
Prior to this, about 900 aspirants had to return home after the tests were cancelled.
Late on Monday, CBI sleuths, led by DIG B.B. Mishra, raided a Ranchi hotel on a tip that the MER question paper was being leaked. They found about 50 sets of hand-written questions, solved answer sheets, and admit cards.
The seizure list also has a paper containing the imitated signature of S.S.Dey, commander, Naval Recruitment Orgainisation and Nilotpal Mitra, Principal Medical Officer. The interrogation revealed that the gang leader was Chapra resident Vijay Sharma, who ran a coaching centre. Sharma is still at large. Sleuths also quizzed naval officers. The gang charged between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 per candidate.
