NEW DELHI, April 19: The meeting of the apex committee to decide on a principal of Motilal Nehru College has been scheduled for tomorrow. The college has been besieged with controversy ever since the earlier principal Ratnakar Pandey retired in September last year.
Apart from the college teachers, the Academics for Action and Development (AAD) have demanded that the entire panel should be scrapped as it accommodates “party persons on supra-academic considerations”.
AAD secretary Dr J L Gupta said the panel of names drawn by the selection committee has ignore merit and experience and, therefore, the post should be re-advertised.
It may be recalled that the staff association of the college had also sent a representation to Vice Chancellor Prof V R Mehta in protest against the selection of the panel. The teachers and karamcharis had even gone on strike to express their resentment against the appointment.
The teachers, in a meeting of the staff association, had also said the panel should not have listed the names in preference, but should have forwarded the entire panel to the apex committee for consideration. The teachers are basically demanding that a teacher of the college should be appointed as the principal instead of an outsider.
In fact, staff association had also passed a resolution that they would not cooperate with any principal if he is an outsider. They have also written an open letter to all these candidates whose names have been short-listed.
The staff association will meet after the apex committee’s meeting to decide on the future course of action.
Meanwhile, Dr Gupta has said this is just one more instance of the governing body using strong-arm tactics to appoint a principal of their choice. Decrying the second extension granted to governing bodies of Delhi University colleges, he has demanded the restructuring and depoliticisation of college governing bodies.
