A medical committee appointed by the Andhra Pradesh High Court today rejected an appeal by the mother of a 24-year-old patient seeking mercy death for her son, hospital sources said in Hyderabad.
‘‘The committee submitted its report to the high court to let the boy die his own death,’’ said Dr Veerkumar, vice-president of Global Hospitals where the youth, K. Venkatesh, has been admitted. Venkatesh is suferring from incurable muscular dystrophy.
Venkatesh had pleaded for mercy death and his mother had moved court, seeking permission to ‘‘advance his death’’ and donate his organs.
A two-member high court bench comprising Chief Justice Devender Gupta and M. Narayan Reddy had appointed the medical team. The team had visited the hospital on December 10 in order to study the situation first-hand.
Venkatesh is on life support system and the disease has no cure, according to his doctors.
Venkatesh, who is suffering from muscular dystrophy, a disease which decays the muscles and is incurable, has been confined to the wheelchair since the age of 10, hospital sources said.
