Sending out more signals of its willingness to restore ties with India after Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali’s telephone conversation with Atal Behari Vajpayee, Islamabad officials today said a package of confidence building measures (CBMs) would be announced soon.

The CBMs to be announced propose to open Pakistan’s airspace to Indian flights, appointment of new high commissioners to head diplomatic missions of both countries, dates for a new SAARC summit as well as liberalisation of visa regime.

And in Karachi today, Jamali sounded unperturbed by the conflicting reactions from India. ‘‘My invitation still stands, for the peace of South Asia, and this is what I told Mr Vajpayee. Either he can come or I can go to India,’’ he told reporters.

More signals of the change in mood in Islamabad came from Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf who launched a blistering attack on religious extremists.‘‘Foreign militants do not pose much of a threat to Pakistan. But Pakistan’s religious extremists pose a danger to Pakistan’s integrity as they are involved in politics of hatred,’’ he said, addressing an air regiment in Sargodha.
