Pakistan has sent a clear signal that it would continue to oppose the expansion of the UN Security Council in the permanent category in the forthcoming inter-government negotiations on world body reforms.
Foreign Secretary Riaz Mohammad Khan maintained the expansion should be only in the non-permanent category.
“The Security Council reform must enlarge the representation of all member States rather than expand the circle of the privileged,” Khan said addressing the United Nations General Assembly.
Pakistan leads a group of member States who argue that they do not want to increase the “centers of power” but are prepared to increase the number of years a non-permanent member can serve from the current two years and even provide for re-election.
Currently, a retiring member cannot immediately seek re-election.
India, Germany, Japan and Brazil, called Group of Four, are strong contenders for permanent seats in an expanded Council.
