Extremist violence in Jammu and Kashmir is ‘‘fuelled by infiltration from Pakistan,’’ and threatened to become a flashpoint for a wider India-Pakistan conflict during most of last year, US State Department said on Wednesday. Its report on global terrorism lists the organisations involved in the terrorism in Kashmir and points out that some are based in Pakistan. (PTI) The terrorism report brings out Pakistan’s dual and contradictory roles — one as an ally of the US in the ‘‘global fight’’ against terrorism and the other as host to thousands of terrorists let loose in Kashmir. ‘‘In 2002, Pakistan remained a key ally in the anti-terrorism effort, offering support to US operations in Afghanistan, implementing close cooperation, and cracking down on extremists. Extremist violence in Kashmir, meanwhile, fuelled by infiltration from Pakistan across the LoC, threatened to become a flashpoint for a India-Pakistan conflict during most of the year,’’ the report notes. The report praised India for its support to the coalition against terrorism while engaging in its efforts to address threats. ‘‘Like the US, India faces a significant terrorist threat. Its primary source is the activity of militants.,’’ the report says and refers to attacks on the Indian Parliament and Kolkata American Center. (PTI)
