Bowing to pressure from NDA allies, the Akali Dal, INLD and TDP, Prime Minister Vajpayee today agreed to raise the price of paddy by Rs 20 per quintal.
The Prime Minister took the decision after an hour-long meeting here today with SAD president Parkash Singh Badal, INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala and TDP leader Yerran Naidu.
After the meeting, Chautala said: ‘‘We are happy with whatever little we got from the Centre for the distressed farmers.”
Badal said that the PM also assured them that he would place their demand of waiving of the interest on agricultural loans and the 5 per cent hike in the price of fertilizer at the next meeting of the Union Cabinet.
