She has never won the national title, having been to the cadet final once and the sub-junior final twice, but Shreya Ghosh probably couldn’t care less.

Having won the U-13 gold in China last year, the 13-year-old collected two more at the ITTF World Junior Circuit at Edmonton, Canada. She won the team gold as well as the individual gold in the cadet section.

Shreya, though, wasn’t the only Indian who tasted success at Edmonton. While China swept to glory in the junior section (U-18), the Indians did likewise in the cadet section (U-15) winning all the six gold medals on offer.

Having won the team gold in the cadet boys and girls, the Indians then swept everything in the individual events. The Indians not only won all the gold medals in their age-group, they took the silver as well and what is more, all four semi-finalists were from India.

In the final of the cadet boys’ singles, Raj Mondal defeated Sathiyar Gnanasekaran with Soumyajit Ghosh and Sourav Saha the respective runners-up. In the cadet girls’ singles it was very much the same story.

In the penultimate stage, Shreya beat Mallika Bhandarkara and Shruti Talnikar overcame Pooja Sahasrabudhe. Shreya then clinched the title by dousing the hopes of Shruti Talnikar in the final.

In the cadet boys’ doubles, Nitin Vasanthphilips and Mohit Verma emerged champions, beating Soumyajit and Raj in the final whilst in the cadet girls’ doubles final, Pooja and Shriti won the title.
