LUCKNOW, JANUARY 24: The Uttar Pradesh government today banned students above 25 years of age from contesting elections to the student unions.
A government order in this regard was issued on Monday, state Higher Education Minister Om Prakash Singh told newspersons here. The ban order would cover universities and degree colleges of the state, he added.
A decision in this regard was taken at a vice chancellors conference recently and was formalised today, he said.
Students, who had failed in a class would also be debarred from contesting election.
Singh said the election of president and general secretary of the students Union would be direct while the other office-bearers would be elected through indirect ballot, to be exercised by an electoral college. Five students, each from among girls, scheduled castes and meritorious categories and one from sports quota, would be compulsorily included in the students unions, he said.
The union would comprise fifty members while the executive would consist of eleven members.
Universities and colleges have been asked to complete elections to the students union by September 30. The state government had asked universities and colleges to conduct all examinations by may 31 and to start the new academic session by July 15, he added.
