January 31: Mumbaikars need not worry about the several aftershock tremors felt in the city after the Gujarat earthquake, as they are not going to cause any property damage.

Thakur Prasad, Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre at the Weather Bureau, informed Newsline that over 100 aftershocks have been recorded in Mumbai since January 26 of decreasing intensities. “The citizens, however, need not fear these tremors as they are gradually fading away and the epicentre is far away in Bhuj. So Mumbai is safe,” said Prasad.

The intensity of the aftershocks is less than four on the richter scale in Mumbai, which is considerably safe.

What is normally not realised is that at least a 100,000 and more quakes of low magnitudes occur routinely everyday throughout the world. These are called microearthquakes. And the aftershocks that Mumbai has been experiencing are in the nature of these microearthquakes. So Mumbai, at least in the near future, can slumber in peace.
