AGARTALA, June 6: More than a 100 Reang refugees have succumbed to gastro-enteritis in camps in north Tripura since the last fortnight, officials said today.

North Tripura additional district magistrate, P Talukdar told PTI that the disease broke out in the camps at Kanchanpur and adjoining areas after a water crisis which forced the people to fetch water from nearby streams.

State Health Minister, Keshab Majumder said here that more than 1,000 affected refugees had been provided medical treatment and the government had taken steps to check the disease.

"A head count is very difficult as everyday there is a rush for admission and everyday people die," the Talukdar said.

Medical camps have been set up near Dasda, Anandabazar, Kasirampur and adjacent areas in Kanchanpur. Measures are being taken to supply adequate medicines, food, and commodities.

The administration has started supplying drinking water in tankers. Directives have been given to dig mark-2 tubewells in different parts of Kanchanpur, theminister said. Awareness campaigns have been started to educate people against using polluted water, he added. Majumder said a message was faxed to the Centre yesterday requesting release of adequate funds to meet the situation.
