The Congress on Tuesday downplayed the resignation by senior leader Akhilesh Das, saying his exit would not even create a ripple and rejected his allegations as an ‘outcry of a frustrated spirit’.

“It is an example of the worst kind of political opportunism. It will have absolutely no impact upon the Congress,” AICC spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan told reporters in New Delhi.

“Many people like him come and go. It will not create even a ripple in the glorious, continuing history of the Congress party,” she said.

Natarajan, who was responding to a question on Das, who was recently dropped from the Union Council of Ministers, said he did not have any problems while he was a Minister.

“We treat his allegations with contempt and reject them as they have been made out of a frustrated spirit after not finding a place in the Council of Ministers,” she said.

Das on Tuesday resigned from the party as well as the Rajya Sabha blaming the ‘coterie’ around Rahul Gandhi.

Das, who represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, made a dramatic move in the Upper House, walking up to Chairman Hamid Ansari and handing over his resignation letter as soon as the House met.
