Having graduated from university, Parthiv Patel returns to school on Sunday. The India ’keeper, who’s played 19 Tests and 14 ODIs, makes his Ranji Trophy debut for Gujarat, against Delhi.
Parthiv’s lack of a domestic grounding is one of the factors blamed for his recent deficiencies in international cricket. Experts have long suggested that he take a break from Tests and return to low-profile cricket to improve his technique.
However, he was pretty clear on what went wrong. ‘‘I don’t see any kind of weakness in my wicketkeeping. It was a bad phase, which I believe comes in the career of every cricketer,’’ he said.
Would Ranji cricket before Tests have prepared him better? ‘‘I don’t think so’’, Parthiv said. ‘‘Nobody told me two years ago when I made my international debut that I was not ready for the challenge. I was very much prepared for international cricket.’’
Which area of ’keeping does he think he needs to work on? ‘‘There are a couple of areas, such as watching the ball closely. I also probably need to look at when I should get up. These are just the basics and I must get them right’’, Parthiv said.
