CHANDIGARH, July 26: One of the two operation theatres at the PGI remained closed for the sixth day today, delaying routine operations, owing to leakage in the drainage pipe on the fourth floor. The number of operations being performed have been reduced to half as only one of the two theatre complexes is working, says one doctor. "On the operation day, we are getting one operation table where as we get two when both the complexes function," he says. "The repair work is complete. The OT will start functioning from tomorrow after the culture reports confirm that the theatre is infection-free," said S.K. Sharma, chairman of the PGI Operation Theatre Management Committee.

On July 21, the air samples were found unsatisfactory for starting any surgical procedure. Both OTs on the fourth and fifth floor were supposed to be functional after the summer vacation, on July 16. Earlier, the same problem cropped up on fifth-floor operation theatre and both the OTs had to be closed for about a week. During vacation, one OT is operational while maintenance work goes alternately in the other OT.
