MUMBAI, APRIL 29: Union Minister for Railways, Mamata Banerjee on Saturday inaugurated the online train information system on the Western Railway website to enable passengers to see train positions on the internet at westernrailwayindia.com.

The data will be continuously updated. The WR had earlier installed the touch screen system at various stations, through which passengers can make PNR inquiries to kwow whether their tickets have been confirmed.

Again, the WR had used IT and had started the interactive voice response system to give online train running position through telephone no 132. This was installed in August 1998 after the digital microwave system was commissioned on WR, and this facility was gradually extended to other stations like Baroda, Ahmedabad, Kota, Jaipur and Indore.

The minister also inaugurated the new scheme of booking season tickets through the internet, so that the 29 lakh commuters of the WR do not have to stand in long queues. A WR spokesman said that they have tied up with rediff.com, so that passengers can log on to the site and book their ticket, which will be delivered to them at a cost. It is later planned to set up terminals at prominent places so that passengers can book their tickets there itself, he added.
