NASHIK MARCH 13: Auctions of onions at the Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee were suspended on Monday morning as Mathadi workers went on a strike to demand their dues and staged a rasta roko.
When the auctions began on Monday morning, about 400 tractor-trailors (each carrying about 30 quintals of onions) had lined up at the APMC. However, Mathadi workers boycotted the auctions to demand their pending wages. They blocked traffic on the Nashik-Aurangabad road for two hours from 11 am to 1 pm.
Later, the stir was called off following an assurance from the local tehsildar that their dues would be cleared by Tuesday evening. According to the protestors, the Government owes them Rs 12.68 lakh towards wages for handling onions under the Market Intervention Scheme of the Government.
The Government had started procuring onions through the Maharashtra State Cooperative Marketing Federation Limited from January 4. The procurement has been suspended since February 23 and the farmers as well as the Mathadi workers are awaiting their dues.
