Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) today said it has discovered natural gas in the Krishna-Godavari basin in the Bay of Bengal. It did not specify the quantum of reserves, but indications were that the find from a single well was a little less than a trillion cubic feet of gas.

‘‘A net thickness of 56 metre of hydrocarbon-bearing sands has been encountered in the well in the depth interval 1,650-2,130 metre. Five zones have been identified to be hydrocarbon bearing in the well in Pliocene section, of which the first one has been tested,’’ said a company release. ‘‘The testing results have given the flow rates measuring 14.42 million cubic feet per day, through half-inch choke,’’ it added.

The large gas-bearing structures was encountered by ONGC’s deep-sea rig Sagar Vijay while drilling its maiden well in the G4-AB location, adjacent to Reliance Industries gas bearing KG-DWN-98/3 block. Sagar Vijay spudded the well, northwest of RIL’s find, in November.

‘‘The well G-4-AB, drilled to a depth of 2,675 metre up to Pliocene sequence on G-4 prospect is located off the coast of Yanam, about 38 km from the nearest landfall point,’’ it added.

The prospect has been mapped by ONGC, based on the integrated analysis of 3D seismic data using the latest interpretation techniques.
