CHANDIGARH, Oct 2: One-sided contests were witnessed on the opening day of the Panjab University Inter-College `A’ division football tournament at PU Campus here today. SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur thrashed Guru Nanak College, Moga 7-0, while DAV College, Hoshiarpur scored a thumping 8-0 win over Government College, Sector 46.

For SGGS, Mahilpur, Shiraz Hassan shot two goals while Charanjit Kumar, Hardeep Singh, Vijay Kumar, Parminder Singh and Malkait Singh got one each.

Gurpreet Singh, Surjit Singh, Harvinder Singh scored twice while Gurjit Singh and Gurdeep Singh got one goal each for DAV College, Hoshiarpur.

In the PU Inter-College `B’ division matches, GTB National College, Dakha defeated Khalsa College, Garhdiwala 3-1.

Dharminder Singh scored for the eventual winners in teh 6th minute of the game.

Gurbinder Singh (60th min) and Inderjit Singh (69th min) were the marksmen for GTB National College, Dakha.

Sukhvir Singh (48th min) netted one for Garhdiwala.

Chess tourney
There was a close contest as 17 players were tied with 2 points each at the end of the second round on the opening day of the 9th Chandigarh state chess championship at St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School-44.

During the meet four players would be selected to represent Chandigarh in the 33rd National `B’ chess championship to be held at Surat from October 24.

Point position at the end of the second round: 2 points: Naveen Jain, Titus Varghese, Kanwar Sandeep Singh, Andey, Nitin, Ramesh Thakur, Sanjeev Kumar, Abhinandan Vohra, Champak Kumar, Sanjeev Biswas, Vipnesh Bhardwaj, BS Rawat, Sameer Malhotra, Sanjeevan, Amit, Baijnath Prasad, Ajay Jaswal and RS Tiwari.

1.5 point: Varun Khullar, Depash Rawal, Rajeev Verma.

1 point: Naveen Bansal, Gaurav Jaswal, SP Singla, Rakesh Kumar, Hit Pal Singh, Sanjeev Prasher, Dev Anand, Selva Kumar, Nitin Swami.

.5 point: Varun rawat, Amandeep Singh and Ankit.
