SAS NAGAR, MARCH 22: Over 150 jhuggis were reduced to ashes after a devastating fire which broke out late last night at the Labour Colony near Punjab Cables Ltd in Phase 8, Industrial Area, Mohali. It took two hours to extinguish the fire, which broke out at around 11.15 last night. Four fire tenders, three from Mohali and one from Chandigarh, were sent to control it. No loss of life was reported.

The SAS Nagar SDM said jhuggi dwellers’ belongings worth around Rs one lakh have been gutted. He said though the colony was an unauthorised one, the administration will be providing them with make shift tents and free langar for a week. As far as financial aid was concerned, he said the decision rested with the deputy commissioner.

Assistant divisional fire officer, B.S. Sidhu, said because they were informed late about the fire, the cause for the blaze cannot be ascertained.

Sardev Bharadwaj, president of the colony, said property worth Rs 25 lakh was gutted in the fire.
