At least six persons, including two children, were reportedly killed and two others seriously injured in Manipur village of Bihar’s Sheikhpura district on Saturday night. All those killed were said to be members of the backward Chaurasia caste. Unconfirmed reports put the death toll at nine.

Sheikhpura DM Rajesh Kumar said the village is OBC dominated but “at this point I am unable to say who or how many have been killed’’. ‘‘The incident could be a retaliation to the killing of four anti-social elements in a gangwar there on May 5 or even related to the panchayat polls tomorrow,’’ he added.

According to reports reaching Patna, the dreaded Ashok Mahato gang was behind the incident. This gang too draws its strength from the backward castes. Sources said the Chaurasia’s had recently backed the gang of Randhir Singh Soni, once a close aide of Mahato.
