Bihar Military Police Additional DG Manoje Nath today demanded an ‘‘unqualified and categorical retraction’’ of state police chief DGP Ashish Ranjan Sinha’s statement that he (Nath) had refused to probe the release of Vijay Prakash, a RJD candidate and brother of Union Minister Jaiprakash Narain Yadav.

Dismissing reports that he had proceeded on leave after being entrusted with the probe, Nath is learnt to have sent an official rebuttal to the DGP, saying, ‘‘I am on duty and the directive issued to me by you for conducting a probe was not tenable.’’

According to the letter, a copy of which was obtained by PTI from the state police headquarters, Nath dared Sinha to probe the case himself or accord proper legal endorsement to him for the probe. ‘‘It has been insinuated, quoting you, in a section of the press that I have played truant in holding the Jamui enquiry and motives have been imputed to this action tarnishing my image and causing distress to me personally and to family members and friends,’’ Nath said in the letter.

‘‘I have postponed my departure on 12 days leave in view of the controversy created by your alleged remarks and to quieten the doubts created by you. I am still willing to take up the responsibility should a proper legal endorsement be made,” he said.

Nath asked the dgp to convince him and the force, ‘‘why you do not find it proper to supervise the case yourself in the manner provided in Section 36 of CrPC.’’
