NOV 11: As Diwali was being celebrated on Sunday, November 7, three individuals killed themselves at different times at Ambernath. Among them was a husband who killed his wife and then hanged himself to death.
Vikram Gaste, a 40-year-old resident of Ganeshnagar in Ambernath, told his son and two daughters to go out of the house to play at around 5 pm on November 7. The children returned by 7 pm, but when their parents did not open the door, they called their uncle Sitaram Londhe, who lives nearby. The door was broken down to reveal the body of 35-year-old Madhuri Gaste lying in a pool of blood. Vikram Gaste was hanging from the ceiling with a nylon rope.
The Ambarnath police have registered a case of murder against Vikram Londhe under section 302 and suicide under section 174.
The other victim was police constable Yuvraj Gaikwad, 31, attached to the Worli police station. An alcoholic, Gaikwad had not been reporting to work for the last one week. On the night of the Laxmi Puja, his wife Shantabai severely admonished Gaikwad when he asked for money to drink. She left the house with their two children and went over to her uncle’s house. Unable to bear the rebuke, Gaikwad hung himself to death with his wife’s saree between 1 am and 8 am.
The third victim was Deepak Gaikwad, a 29-year old unemployed resident of Vadolpada in Ambarnath. Deepak, also a heavy drinker, was spending the night with his wife at his in-laws’ place at Ambarnath. Deepak reportedly demanded tobacco and chunna at 3 am, which his mother-in-law refused. Deepak returned to his house at Vadolpada and hung himself to death from the fan with a rope.
Inspector P R Patil, who is investigating all the three cases, said, “We have registered cases of individual suicides under section 174, while investigations in the case of the Gaste couple are on to ascertain the cause.”
