Old lady visits the Bernabeu

Juventus will look to come away with full points against Real Madrid, Man United hope to secure last 16 spot.

.

Fabio Cannavaro has said that Real Madrid must avenge last month’s Champions League defeat to Juventus when the two sides meet at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

The Italian defender, who left Juventus two years ago, was jeered by home fans in Turin when Real lost 2-1. “We cannot afford to fail,” 35-year-old Cannavaro said on the club’s website (realmadrid.com) after his side were held to a 1-1 draw at Almeria in the Primera Liga on Sunday. “We have to win one way or the other and try to qualify for the next round top of the group,” he added.

Injury troubles

After three matches, Juve top Group H on seven points with Real on six. BATE Borisov of Belarus have two points and face Zenit St Petersburg, who lie bottom with one, on Wednesday. Coach Bernd Schuster may start Christoph Metzelder in defence after Portugal defender Pepe picked up a thigh knock during Sunday’s second half. Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is also a doubt because of a troublesome knee problem picked up in Turin that kept him out of Sunday’s league tie.

Juventus had not won in five games heading into the victory over Real but since then have taken maximum points from three league games, including Saturday’s 2-0 triumph over struggling AS Roma, that moved them to sixth in Serie A.

Injuries continue to dog the Italian side, however, with defenders Dario Knezevic, Jonathan Zebina and Zdenek Grygera out alongside midfielders Christian Poulsen, Cristiano Zanetti and Hasan Salihamidzic. Gianluigi Buffon and David Trezeguet will also be missing.

Repeating history

Meanwhile, Celtic must summon the spirit of 2006 to repeat a famous victory over Manchester United on Wednesday. Two years ago, Shunsuke Nakamura’s late free kick secured a 1-0 Parkhead win that helped Celtic into the knockout phase for the first time but this year the Scots have just one point from three games. A win for United, who will play debutant Ben Foster in the goal instead of first choice Edwin van der Sar, would send them into the last 16 with two games to spare if AaB Alborg fail to beat Villarreal in Denmark.

Also on Wednesday, Arsenal host Fenerbahçe while 2005 champions Porto travel to Dynamo Kyiv, Bayern Munich visit Fiorentina and Lyon play Steaua Bucharest.
