CRPF has complained to the Centre against ‘deliberate victimisation’ of its officers posted at Nandigram in West Bengal for maintaining law and order during panchayat polls, a day after a top officer faced molestation charges.

In a representation made to the Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, the CRPF said such action would not augur well for the personnel who were diligently performing their duties in trouble-torn Nandigram area to maintain peace after CPM cadres allegedly indulged in widespread violence in 2007.

CRPF drew the Centre’s attention following a complaint of alleged molestation filed against its Deputy Inspector General Alok Raj, at present posted in Nandigram.

The first phase of panchayat polls in five districts of the state was marred by an unusual confrontation between CPM MP Lakshman Seth and Raj. The Parliamentarian was shown on television asking the para-military force official not to venture out on patrolling during election time.

Heated arguments between Raj and the CPM Parliamentarian was also captured on record by some television channels.

“We cannot function in this manner. This is a deliberate victimisation,” a senior CRPF official said.

The Union Home Ministry in the meantime sought a detailed report from the West Bengal government on the incident.

The complaint is also believed to have been withdrawn since Raj was addressing a meeting in a local police station during the time women when the alleged molestation was reported to have occurred.
