On the road for the last eight months, umpire Daryl Harper has found a way to keep in touch with his family and friends. Taking his son’s advice seriously, Harper launched his own site after his mail box got crowded every other day. Logging on to http://www.cricketump.com one finds out that it’s more than just a friendly postcard home.

Harper, who is officiating in the India-South Africa Test match here at the Eden Gardens, writes a diary every day and even files a match report. Does he have a deadline? ‘‘No, I do it whenever I feel relaxed,’’ he says.

Harper’s updates from India makes for some interesting reading. The celebrity status he has enjoyed in this cricket-crazy nation has surprised Harper. ‘‘I am very surprised. They ask for my autographs and recall my past decisions which even I have forgotten. I am amazed at their knowledge,’’ he says.

Back home in Australia things are different. ‘‘People just two doors away wouldn’t even bother if I am an umpire or if am going around the world to officiate,’’ reveals Harper.

What about his experiences on the field? ‘‘It’s a dream come true. There is nothing better than officiating here,’’ he informs.

Any memorable moments? He thinks for a while and narrates a funny incident: ‘‘Sehwag is fun to be with on field. He is always in a good mood, whether India is doing well or not. He rips off the walkie-talkie off my belt and starts chatting with the match-referee at times. That’s fun.”
