Fast bowler Kyle Mills and all-rounders Scott Styris and Jacob Oram have been omitted because of injury from a New Zealand squad named Wednesday for the tri-series in Australia beginning January 14.

Mills is recovering from a knee injury, Styris from a back problem and Oram from a torn hamstring and have been left out of the 14-man squad named by New Zealand Cricket for the series against Australia and England.

Coach John Bracewell said the injured players could join the squad during the series, which runs until February 6, if their recoveries allowed.

Tri-series rules allow teams to have squads of 15 players which would mean at least two members of the current squad would have to return home if the injured trio were all passed fit.

Stephen Fleming will captain the New Zealand squad in Australia. He returns to the team on Saturday for the fourth of five one-day matches against Sri Lanka, after being rested for the first three games of that series which New Zealand leads 2-1.

The squad: Stephen Fleming (captain), Andre Adams, Nathan Astle, Shane Bond, James Franklin, Peter Fulton, Mark Gillespie, Hamish Marshall, Michael Mason, Brendon McCullum, Craig McMillan, Jeetan Patel, Ross Taylor and Daniel Vettori.
