May 5: After four days in anticipation of a favourable decision by the Central Railway (CR), the National Railway Mazdoor Union (NRMU) today launched their “pay exact fare” agitation by closing down ticket booking windows at main stations on the CR.
The agitation which was to be launched on April 30 was postponed following talks between the union and the CR management.
On Monday, the ticket windows at CST, Byculla, Dadar, Thane and Kalyan, among other places, were shut between 11.50 am to 1.20 pm, thus causing inconvenience to passengers.
According to B R Irani, acting general secretary of NRMU, “We were insisting on passengers paying exact fare as “fake decoy checks” by the vigilance branch of CR has left counter clerks harassed and tortured for having extra cash while on duty.”
As many as 43 persons were falsely implicated by the vigilance branch in the recent past, he pointed out. This prompted the union to launch an agitation and it closed the booking windows for some time.
