Hitting back at Britain’s culture secretary Andy Burnham for trying to “smear” her relation with a former MP, an NRI human rights campaigner has threatened to sue him and demanded a public apology. Shami Chakrabarti, 39, director of civil rights group Liberty, warned she would bring charges against Burnham .Her action follows an interview of Burnham to the Blairite Progress magazine, in which he said that he found something “very curious in the man (David Davis), who was an exponent of capital punishment, having late-night, hand-wringing, heart-melting phone calls with Shami Chakrabarti”. Chakrabarti and Davis believe that the reference to late night “heart-melting” conversations were Burnham’s attempt to hint at an improper relationship. Burnham’s remarks came after the civil rights activist and Davis, worked together on the campaign against the 42-day proposal on detaining terror suspects without trial.
