The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) may be still trying to establish a link between Javed Sheikh and Ishrat Jahan, who were gunned down in Tuesday’s encounter, but sources in Maharashtra police on Sunday stated that not only were Javed and Ishrat ‘‘known to each other,’’ but that his links with the terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba were also out in the open.

Refuting the statements by Ishrat’s mother, Shamimabano, that she was ‘‘blackmailed’’ by DCB into saying that Ishrat knew Javed, sources in Mumbai and Thane police told The Indian Express that there’s evidence to support that the two ‘‘were known to each other since quite sometime’’.

‘‘When Javed used to stay in Mumbra between 1995 and 1998, he was associated with Ishrat’s father as he (Javed) was an electrician and her father a building contractor. The two (Javed and Ishrat) knew each other since then,’’ a Maharashtra police official involved in the investigations said.

‘‘Even reports that the Gujarat operation had nothing to do with a conspiracy to assassinate CM Narendra Modi are wrong. We have specific intelligence inputs that the two had conducted a recce of Modi’s movements twice before they were shot dead,’’ he said.

Intelligence sources said the duo had conducted the recce twice in May — first on May 14 and the other time from May 24 and May 27. ‘‘It was after the duo sent a report of their last recce that they were supplied with arms,’’ an Intelligence official said.

He added that the two Pakistani youths — Jishan Johar and Amjadali Akbarali Rana — first met Javed in the first week of May and it was through them that the LeT commanders conveyed to Javed the orders for conducting a recce of Modi’s movements.

‘‘As Ishrat was a confidante of Javed and also part of the smaller module, she was included. And the other two (Pakistani youths) joined them to make it a complete module for execution of the conspiracy,’’ said the intelligence official.
