India’s revolving door policy continued today. Even as it won two medals, one more Indian participant was packing his bags without taking part in his event. After wrestler Anil Mann, it was the turn of Delhi bodybuilder Dinesh Singh Aswal, done in under bizarre circumstances after he was found to have violated the amateur code by modelling for a food product. Though the advertisement is two years old, sources say a complaint was lodged with the Games Organising Committee. Dinesh pleaded his innocence, claiming he hadn’t been paid for the ad, but with no luck.

Though Indian officials remained silent on the issue, a BAGOC official confirmed the news.
When contacted by The Indian Express in Delhi, Dinesh’s brother Surender Singh Aswal said: ‘‘We have a certificate from Hercules (the manufacturers of the product) that Dinesh did not receive any money for the ad. And if the ad is the reason for not allowing him to participate in the Asian Games, why did the officials sit quiet for the past two years? After all, Dinesh paticipated at this year’s Commonwealth championship held in Kolkata and won a gold for India.’’
Interestingly, Dinesh only made it to Busan after the Delhi High Court stepped in. The bodybuilder filed a petition before it on September 29, alleging that he was not being allowed to fly to the venue as an official of the Indian Bodybuilding Federation had withheld his passport so that his rival from Singapore could win the Asiad gold.
Justice S Mukherjee granted Dinesh permission to join the Indian team in Korea but on the condition that if the government later gave proof that disqualified him, Aswal would have to pay for his ticket and accomodation.
