The Congress dismissed as ‘mere rhetoric’, the allegations of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati that the Centre was playing politics over the Arushi Talwar murder case and questioned her decision to recommend a CBI probe into the incident.

Earlier in the day, Mayawati alleged that the Congress-led government at the Centre was playing politics over the issue.

On Mayawati’s decision to recommend CBI probe, Tiwari said, “she should state if she has lost her confidence in her own state police.”

Seeking to corner Mayawati, the Congress spokesman alleged that some Dalits had been killed in Varanasi on Wednesday but not even an FIR has been registered. “We are amazed by the Chief Minister’s behaviour.”
