Just affidavits on past criminal records and liabilities are not enough. From the coming Assembly elections candidates will also have to give updates on their poll expenditure every third day, which the Returning Officer will put on a notice board for the voters and the media to scan.

After receiving complaints on this account from several states, the Election Commission (EC) today made it mandatory for candidates to provide regular updates on their poll expenditure and submit it to the the Returning Officer or the poll observer.

‘‘Regular updates will be posted by the EC on the notice board of the Returning Office for the public to see,’’ EC sources said. The EC has directed poll observers to put special emphasis on the regular scrutiny of expenses to ensure that it does not cross the stipulated limit.
