PUNE, March 15: The Pune police commissionerate has evolved uniform norms for the size of festival pandals on Pune’s public roads to avoid inconvenience to road users.

According to the norms, the pandal should not occupy more than one-third of the road width, it should not open towards the centre line of the road and it should not be erected within 10 metres of a road junction.

This was conveyed by Police Commissioner K K Kashyap to a delegation of Express Citizens’ Forum. The delegation had urged the Police Commissioner to evolve norms as under the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation (BPMC) Act, the Police Commissioner’s concurrence is necessary before the Municipal Commissioner grants permission for the erection of temporary festival pandals. While welcoming the Police Commissioner’s step, the Forum delegation requested that during the Ganesh festival, exceptions be made in the case of ten Manache Ganapati, all of whom are more than a century old.
